Crossing Boundaries: Folklore and Folkloristics in a New Age

The development of folkloristics as a disciplinary field exhibits a history of constant self-defining. From defensively drawing boundaries in order to establish an identity, to actively outreaching to other disciplinary domains, folkloristic studies have maintained their uniqueness, while continuously adjusting topics of interests. This process is spontaneous or interactive to the social, economic, cultural, and political changes. In its disciplinary rites of passage, American folkloristics has provided an example of reflexivity. Looking at the current topics and issues interesting to American folklorists, this paper intends to provoke further discussion of the disciplinary development of folklore studies in China.
